An Otter Study

In November 2009 I came across some footage on you tube, of a 1912 silent film.. It lasted for over 8 minutes.. I found it fascinating, however there was no sound and it seemed so slow.. I decided to double the speed.. I looked through my Super Furry Animals CD’s for a song the right length.. and their song ‘Receptacle For The Respectable’ was exactly the right length, but as I said I messed around with effects and it totally spoilt what would have been a great video.. But now, I’ve rectified that.. and I hope you enjoy watching it.. Details of the 114 year footage below these words..

“Watching this recently unearthed treasure is all the more amazing when you realise the footage itself was shot as long ago as 1912. The surviving version of the film you see here was re-edited in the 1920s and titled ‘The Otter’, with a final hunting scene removed. Inter-titles tell us all about the habits of this fascinating creature, alongside the first known shots of an otter swimming underwater. We even get to see the cameramen setting up their special tank in the river for filming these scenes. You can watch almost 1000 other complete films and TV programmes from the BFI National Archive free of charge at the new BFI Mediatheque –
